Active Supervision is Everyone's Responsibility!

Staff/Providers/Assistants must carefully review the policy, training video, active supervision plan & complete the test/knowledge check prior to caring for children.

 

Regulations & Policy

Head Start Performance Standards 1302.47(5) & 1302.90(c)

Staff & consultants follow appropriate practices to keep children safe during all activities, including:

  • Reporting of suspected or known child abuse and neglect

  • Safe sleep practices

  • Appropriate indoor & outdoor supervision of children at all times

  • Only releasing children to an authorized adult

  • Ensure staff, consultants, contractors & volunteers abide by the program’s standards of conduct

Training

Supervision is basic to safety & the prevention of injury as a part of maintaining quality child care.

As part of the hiring/contracting process, all staff are required to watch the Supervision Video & pass the accompanying test prior to beginning their assigned duties.

Active Supervision Plan 

Created by first day of class for part-year classrooms & beginning of program year for full-year classrooms.

Each Classroom & Home- Based staff must develop an Active Supervision Plan specific to each teaching team & site. The plan will address any safety concerns specific to your classroom and/or environment. Include alternate steps if you anticipate changes in your schedule. For example: fire drill, lock down, substitute staff….

Post the plan near the center’s posted license. Active Supervision Plan must be reviewed at least quarterly & revisions made based on changes in the environment and/or child needs/behaviors.

Monitoring

All Active Supervision Monitoring must be documented on the Unannounced Active Supervision Monitoring Checklist.

Self Monitoring: Grantee Operated program designee will conduct an Unannounced Supervision visit per class at least once per month which will be entered into COPA.

Grantee Monitoring: Grantee designee will conduct an Unannounced Supervision visit at least once per quarter

Parent Involvement

Parents must receive Active Supervision parent handouts & watch video upon enrollment.

Note: Our orientation video includes a classroom supervision video that aligns with the parent handout. In the event that a parent needs additional guidance or a reminder, here is the video that focuses specifically on supervision.
